Scarlett Markham - Flour Pail Kids

A bit about Scarlett, from Scarlett -

What started out as a small zine in 2015, has blown up into a full on operation of all my art work.

I had doodled all my life, but never thought to do anything in particular with it. I didn’t go to college, worked in retail since I was sixteen, and got married to my high school sweetheart right out of school at 18 (don’t fret, we’ve been awesomely married going on 12 years now.) Decided summer of ‘15 that it might be fun to do something with all my paper scratchings.

Flour Pail Kids was born, with some terrible jokes and a home printer, I had my first issue of FPK. I ended up making 4 issues before I became too busy pursuing other “artistic” endeavors. Being a pin collector since I was a kid, I really wanted to make pins of my own. I researched wholesale pricing for enamel pins and found out they were way out of my pricing league. Being a skateboarder, I had used and broken skate decks with no purpose. Well, there was my solution; Make pins out of recycled skateboards. They have done so well, that I’ve made and sold hundreds of pins in the past couple of years. I love how I am allotted so much freedom by making each one. Not restrained by minimum orders, or color restrictions. Every piece I make is unique, but that obviously coincides with the process.

Seeing how the pins were doing well, I thought “well, let’s see what else I can make.” I have now expanded into shirts, skateboards, handmade recycled skateboard home goods, coozies, stickers, embroidered patches, and much more.

I have even taken the opportunity because I create as my full time job to give back to the community. Along with Krudco, Friends of Roc City Skatepark, and Breaking Free Skatepark; we started Ladies Skate Night every third Monday night of the month at BFS. It’s a safe and non-judgement space and time for women and girls to learn skateboarding, scootering, bmxing, roller skating and blading. I’ve also become a board member of Friends of Roc City Skatepark, an organization working to bring a full concrete world class Skatepark to downtown Rochester, NY. Also, I’ll be instructing drumming lesson for the Girls Rock! Camp this summer. It’s a great opportunity for young women to learn an instrument and encourage a female music scene locally! Staying involved with the great things going on in the city is a huge joy.

Thanks!
