Meet our Spring Featured Artist - Emily Tyman
Emily Tyman is a local Finger Lakes artist who loves to dip her toes into every art medium that she can. She started making art at a young age and was inspired during her time at the University of Rochester to change her major from Biology to Studio Art and Art History. Eventually, she realized that art was an important part of her life and she wanted to make a career out of it. She went on to complete her MFA at SUNY New Paltz, concentrating in Painting and Drawing.
While painting has been her focus for some time, she also greatly enjoys learning new artistic processes. During the pandemic, she taught herself different techniques of papermaking and bookbinding before taking classes during her graduate program. Currently, she is focused on printmaking and creating linocut prints. Linocut printing is a process in which linoleum is carved into to create an image. The carved image is then inked with a roller and pressed onto paper to create the print. Emily creates sweet and whimsical prints made to put a smile on your face. Each print is created by hand and vary slightly from each other, which makes each one unique!
Emily also enjoys making handmade paper that she uses for some of her prints. This process involves turning the paper fiber into a pulp that can be put through a screen to form a sheet of paper. She makes paper ranging from using cotton, abaca fiber, to using recycled paper. The recycled paper is made from tearing down old paper scraps and repurposing those to make new sheets of paper.
